This is the fifth article of homemade ice cream series. For part four, click here.
PS. Sorry for the not so clear pictures, my camera wasn’t on macro!
There are days when the leftover tub of gourmet ice cream in your fridge just isn’t going to cut it. Neither is Mr Cadbury & its pitiful preservative-overdosed neighbours in the vending machine (N-O). & the outrageously bad sundaes at Swenson’s? Forget it. My fussy palette needs a sweet treat to hit the right spot. This new place hit my I spot (I for Ice cream) where I’m ready to bolt my main courses for this great new ice cream cafe.
I’ve often stared at an ice cream counter desperate & hoped that they’d crazier flavours that would make me quiver with excitement. Now that vibrator has entered. Varietiez, a new ice cream shop is here at an unexpected place- the suburban Bedok Reservoir (but good for me since I stay in the East). With a creative array of not just ice cream, but excellent ice cream pastries are waiting for you on days when a regular treat won’t do. Mmm, Big O, here I come!
These decadent patiscream are all handmade by Larry, owner of Varietiez, a self-taught ice cream patissier whose passion lies in continuously designing & experimenting creative flavours to excite his customers, impresses me. So much that I’d nothing but Varietiez patiscream as my dinner, all in a heartbeat.
So what is patiscream?
PATISCREAM = Pastries + Ice cream ! (aka MB: mind blower)
Ingenious approach to the already booming ice cream industry in Singapore, Larry decides to add a little more drama & edge to his creations, & hence introduced the patiscream series which are all handcrafted without any artificial flavourings or gluten & mind blowingly gooood.
& don’t worry too much about the price. It comes at only $3 for a classic scoop. & the heavenly Patiscream at $6.50. Whoohoo!
What do you get when you combine caramel + caramelized cookies + mascarpone cream cheese ice cream? ! The Big O! In reality, it’s named C4,where the caramelized cookies & mascarpone ice cream are both very magnificent. Though the crust of the tartlet could have been thinner, the caramelized cookies taste like sweet popcorn, suck that together with the ultra smooth & slightly salted mascarpone, top rated!
A must try!
This is another patiscream worth sucking on. Poke a hole through the lady finger (the brown platform) & you’d know how soft it is. Then take a bite with the mascarpone, bailey & seasalt ice cream. Now, resist the urge to stuff MBS into your mouth at once.
The lady finger reminds me of a very very moist espresso sponge cake, only more moist with the swirling ice cream & tasty espresso. I’m awed!
A pattiscream that is one of the hot favourites, the Peanut Tarla sits on a bed of homemade nutella. In this age, who actually takes the extra time to concoct his own nutella? Larry the good-hearted owner!
The meaning of Tiramisu is actually “pull me up” which refers to the alcohol & coffee tastes that hit you as soon as you’ve the first bite. Unlike many others which are usually stingy with the alcohol content, this baby here stays true to its name.
So tasty, this is the first Tiramisu that won me over. Hooray!
Be prepared to be mind-blown away.
Underneath its rocky & innocent exterior lies a pleasant surprise that awaits you. I’m not sure what to call the biscuit, (since the owner has yet to come up with a name) but let’s go with Magic Biscuit & Brownie for now.
So the magic biscuit is kind of like a more dense version of a biscuit, of course it’s more superior & delicate in taste: very crispy but cheeeeewyyy on the inside & hence a sweet magic that lights up my night. Well, I’m in love! The chocolaty brownie is dense in flavour & not sweet (yay!), already good on its own you don’t need any ice cream companions!
Also a must try!
What’s an ice cream meal without Waffles?
I’m usually disappointed when I order waffles. They either taste soggy or old or not crispy enough or cheap or artificial. But this, brings an expression to my face. Certainly not disappointment because it tastes clean & fresh! Try it to believe it yourself.
The waffles is interestingly made. Slightly salted, I can’t believe how super soft it is inside that it’s fluffy & airy to a point but still maintains its crisp. & about the salted part? The owner uses a pinch of sea salt, striking a perfect balance with the already sweet ice creams. Perfect!! I really like my desserts to be savoury & sweet at the same time. A perfect marriage I say.
Here, Mao Shan Wang, Durian & Bailey Mascarpone scoops go along with my salted waffles. I know the first two flavours are unusual to go with waffles, but I’m unusual like that! Heehee! Oh by the way, Larry the owner advises to pick durian ice cream when they’re in season so they taste as equally great as they’re originally. That’s June – August. If not, don’t blame me for not telling you!
Sit tight, we’re moving on to some fantastic ice creams now. Available in single scoops.
Top: Dark Chocolate. Bottom: Black Cookie & Cream.
There’s a bit of a chocolate explosion with every bite in Dark Chocolate, so tread carefully in this rich dark chocolate flavor & succumb to its boldness.
Top: Ribena Lemon. Bottom: Pistachio.
The Pistachio here totally rocks my world. My knees give in to the pungent pistachio (in an extremely good way) which is very robust in its nutty flavour. I’m a pistachio nut & this leave a 15 second break of silence as I indulge in a pistachio fantasy, in a whole new world.
A must try if you like lethal ice creams!
The list of great ice creams go on, & so will your grin and belly be if you step into Varietiez. I absolutely can’t wait for my next visit! I shall pounce on my favourites again soon!
Pss..I heard that ice cream classes are shakin up soon! Stay tuned to their Facebook for the latest updates.
Did you know that Varietiez even has diabetic ice cream? Ace for thoughtfulness!
