I dance while blushing.
-Haiku before bed. Sweet dreams-
While maintenance for dark hair come cheap & easy, finding the right man isn’t. There’s always, forever a surplus of hot chics to the number of men. We’re actually not as special as we thought huh. Anyway, I learnt something about hair colour based on my dating history.
Men generally prefer brunettes! Not the orange & reds that I’ve been spotting previously. Somehow they seem too loud, different & somewhat frivolous-looking for men to accept. Blondes, streaks & bleach seem to suggest an untamed side of chics that they can’t handle, though it’s simply an alternative to boring for us.
So I asked around a few of my male friends what they thought [it's kind of limited cause it's 1am on a Thursday which means Ladies' Night & I'm rushing this entry haha]:
Model 22, Pisces: Dark hair comes across as sexy, strong, serious colour.
Student 22, Capricorn: Dark hair! Light is too trying to act blonde.
Student 23, Aquariaus: Dark hair is so demure and elegant.
Student 22, Capricorn: Dark hair suggests a personality which is down to earth, warm & friendly!
Soooooo, I went a dark olive!
Ok fine, I didn’t do it to attract the opposite sex. I’d rather swallow my water bottle than get sculpted by men’s opinion. Truth be told, I can’t seem to get enough of gorgeous dark hair! Kate Middleton, Megan Fox, Leighton Meester, Charlotte York (SATC), yea you know the style. Bet you didn’t know I only started dyeing my hair when I was 23. Super late bloomer! Before that, I was a natural black virgin, too stubborn for any colour on the palette to touch my strands.
Was supposed to have a photoshoot for my hair but it got cancelled last minute cause the Art Director had to send her Mom to the hospital. So, I ended up snapping some really narcissistic shots of myself. Clearly not very enjoying being my own photographer but I welcome your judgmental remarks:
Colour in reality is of a dark olive, darker than what you’re seeing here & almost a black when I just dyed. Melvin as usual is fabulous! It faded quickly to what I desired. So if you normally follow the international trend of going light for Summer & dark for Winter, you should totally buck the trend! Cause I just did!
If you really like this & would like to try it out yourself, the colour here is one of iNOA‘s non-Ammonia colour range which gives you:
Till 24 July 2011 only, Salon Vim is offering $99 for its Creative Cut + Colour + Highlight! That’s almost 30% off for a fabulous Summer hair. Call 6884 7757 & go take advantage of this hair deal:
On a separate note, shall I let you know my men-luck again on the colour change in one month’s time?
Compliments. I’ve been getting quite of lot of them from friends about how much better I look, & they’d absolutely no clue what I did (I got botox) till I raved to them about my latest respect & love for injections! I still can’t believe these tiny injections could fetch so much flattery but that’s how natural Dr Kelvin Chua made me look! Uh huh.
With a pretty significant string of parties: Pre-Christmas, Christmas, Post-Christmas, CNY (15 days), Valentine’s Day & other what nots staring in my face & my man jaws, I found myself sitting on the edge of Dr Kelvin Chua’s chair. Very frankly, I did not see this scene coming. I’ve always pictured myself aging gracefully, without the help of botox, fillers & what nots. Wrong! I got very tired of photoshopping my man jaws, so hey! Why not take a shot? So here I was, with the most honest & trust-worthy doctor I know.
Before I show you my before & after, did you know that an oval face of a small nose, slightly protruded lips & slightly expressed chin, is considered as most attractive today? A bachelorette got to look her best!
Characteristic features of the female “sexy face” in comparison to the “unsexy face”:
Characteristics of the male “Sexy face” in the comparison to the “unsexy face”:
With botox, I’m expected to have a more ‘dainty’ face shape, which is what I’ve been dying to have (I’m ignoring those people who love my chiseled jaws, insane!) :
Number of shots: I was given 3 shots at each side of the jaws on my first visit & the same number of shots when I went back for a second visit a month later.
Precaution: Ask to be shown the botox bottle & see your doctor pull the stuff out from the bottle. Discuss with your doctor so that he/she can meet your expectations. I’ve heard my friends (who went to other doctors) who didn’t even see any difference. But Dr Chua is a PRO at this! Wait till you see my after pictures. Ace!
I’ve also heard from a nurse of a particular famous female doctor whose clinic in Orchard Road uses bogus botox. Yes, it’s wise to make sure the bottle is labeled botox, no matter how reputable your dermatologist or doctor seem. Dr Kelvin Chua showed me the bottles of botox used on me, automatically, which is a step that all doctors should take.
Pain factor: None! No kidding. I was scared for nothing. I’m a major wuss when it comes to pain. Botox is…(I’m even having difficulties trying to find a word to describe the pain & I’ve to go with Totally Painless!) not even like a pinch of an ant bite. Nope. Thank you, Dr Chua!
Downtime: Zerol! In fact, there wasn’t even bruising for me. The slight redness subsided within 1 minute. The entire procedure only took less than 5 minutes! There wasn’t any soreness too, I could eat, talk, suck, scream like my usual.
Effects: 4-8 months, some individuals see 1 year.
It’s coming 4 months & I’m still extremely pleased with the believable results Dr Kelvin Chua has achieved on me, & if you ask me, whether botox is a friend or foe for people like me in the 20s? I say definitely more than friend!
Cost (varies): For my stubborn man jaws, the total was about $1,500. If it lasts for 1 year, it’ll be about $120/month. Hooray!
Believe me when I tell you I love botox. Are you listening? I love it!

Mom’s breakfast for a week = I better behave myself during Chinese New Year.
Perhaps this might work on a 6 year old? Or a homeless, hungry man.
Updated 20 January: The pineapple tarts featured in this entry is SOLD OUT! The stall does have other kind of pineapple tarts (plus an entire store of other goodies) still available; open tarts, mini closed tarts. Call to check!
This is the second part in a pineapple tart CNY special series. For the first part, click here.
I just hit a new high in piney.
A few days ago, I found out that my favourite fruit juice stall in Singapore sells the bestest handmade mouth watering deliciously lusciously moist pineys!! Isn’t it amazing sometimes when you just walk past a stall & you instantly bond with the food there? Of course, there are times of misjudgements too when the food pictures look tempting but taste 180degrees different but this, my friend, spoke to me. I concluded since their fruit juices are so damn awesome, their CNY goodies can’t be that bad either. A pat on the back for me for trying.
They were so heavenly divine that I wolfed down half a container under 2 minutes. No need to really picture that unglamourous scene, but just know that they’re really that extraordinary. You could ask Angel S, she’d swear that I was in piney heaven no doubt.
Because they’re so damn soft & buttery (I LOVE butter!), they’re a little messier to eat, just come crumbling down if you hold a little tighter. But looking glamourous while popping these darlings isn’t my biggest priority here. I thought I was sniffling a baby’s butt, they are incredibly soft, milky, fragrant, fresh & this part’s not like a baby’s butt- the pineapple jam a PERFECT light golden filling which slowly disintegrates when savoured. My goodness! I want them for breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner & supper! I really mean it, I could survive on these pineys the whole day, if not given their expensive price tag.
It’s a good idea to eat them with a spoon, not fork if not the whole thing will become a piney crumble. There’s bound to be some crust flakes, so scoop them up with your spoon, you won’t want to waste these joys.
Now, I’m going to plan strategically; how many to buy at a time & the number of visits to the stall so I can have enough to eat on a daily basis & still have a good portion left for CNY.

This is the fifth article of homemade ice cream series. For part four, click here.
PS. Sorry for the not so clear pictures, my camera wasn’t on macro!
There are days when the leftover tub of gourmet ice cream in your fridge just isn’t going to cut it. Neither is Mr Cadbury & its pitiful preservative-overdosed neighbours in the vending machine (N-O). & the outrageously bad sundaes at Swenson’s? Forget it. My fussy palette needs a sweet treat to hit the right spot. This new place hit my I spot (I for Ice cream) where I’m ready to bolt my main courses for this great new ice cream cafe.
I’ve often stared at an ice cream counter desperate & hoped that they’d crazier flavours that would make me quiver with excitement. Now that vibrator has entered. Varietiez, a new ice cream shop is here at an unexpected place- the suburban Bedok Reservoir (but good for me since I stay in the East). With a creative array of not just ice cream, but excellent ice cream pastries are waiting for you on days when a regular treat won’t do. Mmm, Big O, here I come!
These decadent patiscream are all handmade by Larry, owner of Varietiez, a self-taught ice cream patissier whose passion lies in continuously designing & experimenting creative flavours to excite his customers, impresses me. So much that I’d nothing but Varietiez patiscream as my dinner, all in a heartbeat.
So what is patiscream?
PATISCREAM = Pastries + Ice cream ! (aka MB: mind blower)
Ingenious approach to the already booming ice cream industry in Singapore, Larry decides to add a little more drama & edge to his creations, & hence introduced the patiscream series which are all handcrafted without any artificial flavourings or gluten & mind blowingly gooood.
& don’t worry too much about the price. It comes at only $3 for a classic scoop. & the heavenly Patiscream at $6.50. Whoohoo!
What do you get when you combine caramel + caramelized cookies + mascarpone cream cheese ice cream? ! The Big O! In reality, it’s named C4,where the caramelized cookies & mascarpone ice cream are both very magnificent. Though the crust of the tartlet could have been thinner, the caramelized cookies taste like sweet popcorn, suck that together with the ultra smooth & slightly salted mascarpone, top rated!
A must try!
This is another patiscream worth sucking on. Poke a hole through the lady finger (the brown platform) & you’d know how soft it is. Then take a bite with the mascarpone, bailey & seasalt ice cream. Now, resist the urge to stuff MBS into your mouth at once.
The lady finger reminds me of a very very moist espresso sponge cake, only more moist with the swirling ice cream & tasty espresso. I’m awed!
A pattiscream that is one of the hot favourites, the Peanut Tarla sits on a bed of homemade nutella. In this age, who actually takes the extra time to concoct his own nutella? Larry the good-hearted owner!
The meaning of Tiramisu is actually “pull me up” which refers to the alcohol & coffee tastes that hit you as soon as you’ve the first bite. Unlike many others which are usually stingy with the alcohol content, this baby here stays true to its name.
So tasty, this is the first Tiramisu that won me over. Hooray!
Be prepared to be mind-blown away.
Underneath its rocky & innocent exterior lies a pleasant surprise that awaits you. I’m not sure what to call the biscuit, (since the owner has yet to come up with a name) but let’s go with Magic Biscuit & Brownie for now.
So the magic biscuit is kind of like a more dense version of a biscuit, of course it’s more superior & delicate in taste: very crispy but cheeeeewyyy on the inside & hence a sweet magic that lights up my night. Well, I’m in love! The chocolaty brownie is dense in flavour & not sweet (yay!), already good on its own you don’t need any ice cream companions!
Also a must try!
What’s an ice cream meal without Waffles?
I’m usually disappointed when I order waffles. They either taste soggy or old or not crispy enough or cheap or artificial. But this, brings an expression to my face. Certainly not disappointment because it tastes clean & fresh! Try it to believe it yourself.
The waffles is interestingly made. Slightly salted, I can’t believe how super soft it is inside that it’s fluffy & airy to a point but still maintains its crisp. & about the salted part? The owner uses a pinch of sea salt, striking a perfect balance with the already sweet ice creams. Perfect!! I really like my desserts to be savoury & sweet at the same time. A perfect marriage I say.
Here, Mao Shan Wang, Durian & Bailey Mascarpone scoops go along with my salted waffles. I know the first two flavours are unusual to go with waffles, but I’m unusual like that! Heehee! Oh by the way, Larry the owner advises to pick durian ice cream when they’re in season so they taste as equally great as they’re originally. That’s June – August. If not, don’t blame me for not telling you!
Sit tight, we’re moving on to some fantastic ice creams now. Available in single scoops.
Top: Dark Chocolate. Bottom: Black Cookie & Cream.
There’s a bit of a chocolate explosion with every bite in Dark Chocolate, so tread carefully in this rich dark chocolate flavor & succumb to its boldness.
Top: Ribena Lemon. Bottom: Pistachio.
The Pistachio here totally rocks my world. My knees give in to the pungent pistachio (in an extremely good way) which is very robust in its nutty flavour. I’m a pistachio nut & this leave a 15 second break of silence as I indulge in a pistachio fantasy, in a whole new world.
A must try if you like lethal ice creams!
The list of great ice creams go on, & so will your grin and belly be if you step into Varietiez. I absolutely can’t wait for my next visit! I shall pounce on my favourites again soon!
Pss..I heard that ice cream classes are shakin up soon! Stay tuned to their Facebook for the latest updates.
Did you know that Varietiez even has diabetic ice cream? Ace for thoughtfulness!
It’s happening in about a week. Have you decided where your heart will be this Christmas? I’ve, weeks ago when I tried out Cedele’s limited edition goodies.
This is probably the cake to look out for this year. Flip through any major newspaper in Singapore & you see Editors raving about this Limited Edition Yuzu Citrus Logcake $48. Of course, every classic needs an update, so here’s a creative twist to freshen things up in a logcake- cold pressed concentrated yuzu juice imported directly from Kochi Island of Japan. Yes! You’re reading it right! Anyway, the plain thought of an expensive fruit, Yuzu, already scored massive points.
Yuzu, a Japanese citrus fruit, is more commonly found in Japan. Though both sour, I personally like yuzu more than lemon because it tastes more…how should I put it. Delicate? Less bitter? More floral? It also sounds much classier. Imagine Yuzu logcake VS Lemon logcake. Which would you pay $48 for? Not that I don’t think the Yuzu Citrus Logcake from Cedele is worth every penny, I really do. If not I wouldn’t be writing about it & still plaster this entry with a ‘Hazel Recommends’. & you know what this means for a fuss pot like me!
It’s very velvety & the floral refreshing taste combine with a tinge of saltiness hit me. It was like heaven & earth when the heavenly fruit Yuzu, marries the earthy log. Plus it’s bright, cheerful & sweet-looking just like me. Delightful!
If the Yuzu Citrus Logcake was heaven & earth, then this Flourless Chocolate Logcake $39.80 must be the LBD (Little Black Dress) of the Christmas chocolate. This my dears, is what every Cedele fan is familiar with, crazy over every year, praying & crossing fingers every December that the famous health restaurant will bring back. & thankfully for us this year, it’s back!
The cake part itself was fantastic enough; definitely very chocolaty & intensely rich. then when you get to the middle, it’s like chocolate mud! Hooray! I totally not only want to wallop the whole thing myself but want to swim in it as well!
& the fact that the cake is flourless & uses only organic unrefined sugar really showed how skilled the artisans at Cedele are. Impressive!
What was a quiet, private silence while my dining companion & I both savour the previous goodies with respect for them turned into an animated conversation of “Mmmm, the crust is DAMN GOOD MAN!” & “My Lord, the pineapple jam! SO DAMN SOFT!” with our cutlery flailing in the air.
Yep, the Pineapple Mince Pie $20/6pcs really got us even more high & hyper. I mean, Cedele really proved that pineapple fillings can be fresh & TENDER. If you find pineapple fillings softer than Cedele’s, let me know! There were walnut bits too & the entire filling still stayed so moist & heavenly. Two thumbs up!
Ok, truth be told, this is my first Christmas fruit roll. I don’t normally order this since firstly, it doesn’t aesthetically wow me & secondly, figs & dates though I like to eat them, sound really like a Martha Stewart kind of Christmas treat. So hence I’ve never felt compelled to buy it. Anyhow, tried it & loved it!
For some reason, I felt so Christmasy eating it even though I’d this in late November. I guess a good fruitcake like the Flourless Fruit Cake Roll (250gm) $19.50 does transport a person to a Christmas story, one with yummy traditions.
Ok, end of raving. I really hope you’ve already called up Cedele. Cause it’s a mad house like always & you really don’t want to miss out on Cedele’s festive treats. Or if you like to dine out, make your reservations at their restaurants (their turkey is awesome, but much better dine out than in). Hustle!
Cedele goodies are available at all 21 Cedele outlets island-wide. Free delivery for orders above $250. Last order: 21 December 2010. For a list of Cedele locations, click here.
There are people in life whom I’m always thankful for. No matter how trivial; like the aunty at the ice cream store who always knew to bake my waffles to how I like them, the courier guy who delivers my packages in time & the mute pedicurist who scrubs dead skin off my feet to extreme smoothness without complaining.
Now, I’m offering my devotion & thanks to the latest person who made me feel good about myself & added that spring in my footsteps: my hairstylist.
After two decades, I found Melvin.
Don’t be jealous. Like I said, this happened after two decades of disastrous jobs, starting from my mom. She was my first stylist & frugal being her middle name, she forced me to be her ‘customer’ till I was old enough to pay for my own haircut elsewhere. If you must know, I was once a mushroom head, my mom didn’t allow me to have long hair. When I finally saved up for a decent cut, I’d the okays, the not bads, & the very bads but noone really made it to my Ace list (I admit I’m particular). Till now!
Reasons to change your hair stylist:
If you experience any two of these red flags, you should move on. Because you deserve better. Do you really want to just stick with an ordinary stylist just because you know you can count on him/her for a safe job or is it because you feel guilty leaving? Don’t.
To be completely honest, I was skeptical seeing other bloggers write about Salon Vim by Chez Vous. Is the salon really that great? Thankfully for the Gemini in me, I take pleasure in changes & taking risks. Now, I reap the benefits of switching. Check out my new knockout hair!
Back-tracking to the very bad jobs I’d, it included one maggie mee perm somewhere in Braddel which has to be my worst hair crisis ever. Actually, it wasn’t even as stylish as maggie mee, it was a scrunched up bunch of damage. I was left scarred emotionally & not only did my long hair shrink into a lob (long bob), its natural shine said goodbye. I remember tearing, so yes, I’ve had my share of dislikes & I switch hair stylists as quickly as I can.
I know changing a hair stylist is easier said than done. First you must do tons of research (googling plus word of mouth), as if the opinions of salons & stylists aren’t confusing enough, you must then consider the pricing, location convenience, make an appointment with the haughty receptionist & finally surrender your fate into the hands of a complete stranger.
PS. the hair wash by Vincent was so phenomenal I’m dedicating another post for it.
Yess YES YESSS! Metals & sultry can co-exist.
I got my new Safari Metallic Nails from Pink Parlour last week! I’m super thrilled! I’m sure you can tell from my gleaming picture above!
I’ve never done any fancy nails like acrylic or gel before cause I think they look kinda too girly, delicate, freakishly long & breakable for someone rough like me. Haha! But look at these! They’re so fiercely futuristic I’m on LianHe WanBao!
Ah, I look like a SYT (Sweet Young Thing) on the paper, don’t I. But hey, who says you can’t have a wild side too?
These Sparkly Safaris come in various wild animal prints- gold & silver. I picked the Tiger. Grrr. Take your pick at Pink Parlour! Ahh, high shine & no paint! They scream Oh My Godly Wild!
Aren’t they purrfect for Christmas? They take only 30 minutes to glue on. The It Nails for people like me who can’t sit there for 2 hours just decorating nails. All you gotta do is let the pros at Pink Parlour paste the nail extensions on.
Ta-daaaa! Foxy with a tinge of naughty, don’t you want them on your fingertips too?
Guess what?! To challenge myself & remain effectively bilingual, I’m writing in Chinese too for this post! It has been years since I last wrote for a Chinese paper, so tell me what you guys think! Cheers!
What would your last meal be?
If you asked me this few years back, I couldn’t have answered you. To choose among the many many delights is painful. I remember taking a long time to come to terms to it, and finally a couple of years back, I settled on one category – seafood! If you’re looking for a place to satisfy that craving for a fresh catch, read on!
For as long as I could recall, my mom only cooks fish & seafood. Poultry & red meat are a no-no at home. She would tell us how unhappy the animals were before getting slaughtered & the (unimaginably huge) amount of (bad) hormones people consume from the dead animals. This was perhaps why I could relate so well with this new cafe at Eastwood Centre – Dann’s Daily Pescetarian Cafe.
不知道是不是因为从小妈妈鱼素的烹饪与教诲让我对Eastwood Centre 新开张的 鱼素咖啡厅－Dann’s Daily Pescetarian Cafe 感觉收悉，也带有一点新鲜与期待。
Pesce…what? To give you a clearer definition, this is what WikiPedia has to say on the word pescetarian: ‘Pescetarianism, also called pesco-vegetarianism, is the practice of a diet that includes seafood and excludes other animals. In addition to fish and/or shellfish, a pescetarian diet typically includes some or all of vegetables, fruit, nuts, grains, beans, eggs and dairy.
Sometimes, the better things in life are worth putting on your heels & stepping on the gas pedal for. Situated along the shops at Eastwood Centre in the unassuming & quiet neighbourhood lies Dann’s Daily Pescetarian Cafe, named after the owners’ 6-year-old son, Dann. The charm of the place is enhanced by the two owners’ (Chris & Xing) passion – freshly roasted alkaline organic coffee, organic wholemeal triangle toasties, steamed cupcakes & many more dishes whipped up with nutritional ingredients.
Did you know that the dishes here are cooked with alkaline water? It’s also the first & only dining that serves free flow of alkaline water.
轻松洋溢的咖啡厅是为六岁儿子 Dann 而取名，也当然是老板和老板娘 (Chris 与 Xing) 爱的结晶。主人的认真，完全体会在细心为客人精挑细选的营养食材。
You know your fish is fresh when it’s steamed, with minimal ingredients. This Pear Calamansi Salmon ($25) is a freshness-guaranteed dish. By using only pear & calamansi, the salmon is naturally flavoured. I liked the natural sweetness from the fish, no fishy smell, thank goodness. Just subtly sweet, something that only damaged tastebuds can never understand.
If this is right up your alley, go early as the cafe only brings in limited catch per day, as they get the freshest only!
Consisting of Rice Salad (served warm), Soup & a choice of Curry or Stew is the Set Meal which goes for only $10. They’re hearty, reassuring dishes which have a little bit of everything: rounded & complex flavour from the chewy steamed brown & wild rice, the nuttiness from the organic sprouts & the juiciness from the fresh Shitake mushrooms.
Did you know that the most nutritional rice are actually brown & wild rice? If you haven’t heard of wild rice, it’s actually a type of grass which contains high amounts of fibre & a compound that reduces cholesterol among other nutritional value.
Bringing back childhood memories are the freshly-toasted Triangle Toasties （$4 onwards）! I’ll be writing on three of my favourites here (more to come in the future I’m sure).
1) Topping my chart is the Otah Cucumber Triangle Toasties.
Made with organic wholemeal Vegan bread, the combination of the aromatic springy otah married with the crunchy Japanese cucumber is epic! A must try!
2) Coming closely in is the Mushroom Cheese Triangle Toasties made lovelier with the crispy organic wholemeal vegan bread & the underrated star? I must say it’s the Parsley!
2）香菇起司三角烤面包 － 烤面包脆脆的外皮包着嫩嫩的香菇, Parmesan 起司和香菜是有多么饱满， 超赞的啦！
3）Need I say more? Just look at how much sardine there is packed in the Chilli Onion Sardine Triangle Toasties! Juicy!
3）沙丁鱼三角烤面包 － 经典的辣味沙丁鱼，多到汁都涌出来了啦！
& I haven’t forgotten dessert, of course. Now, who says cupcakes have to be baked & topped with sugar-loaded icing? Dann’s Daily continues to defy traditions with its Steamed Cupcakes (from $3) - made with unbleached flour, they’re a delectable surprise.
Among the many flavours creatively designed, here are some of my recommendations: Durian (Seasonal only, depending on freshness of durians), Pumpkin, Chocolate Strawberries, Beet & Figs & last but not least, Gula Melaka (topped with shredded coconut).
Psss. Dip them with Dann’s Daily homemade Gula Melaka Chocolate sauce!
甜点！我没忘！谁说杯杯糕必须用大量的糖烤的？Dann’s Daily 打破传统观念，以有未漂白面粉的蒸杯杯糕（$3起）打入新加坡市场。

I love ice cream so much. So much! I’m a monster who can feast on tubs of ice cream non stop, till I let out a big fart. Ok, I’m just joking about the extra body gas. I’m Tinkerbell who nibbles on ice cream daintily! Guess this makes a more pleasant pictorial. Anyhow, heat or no Summer heat, my favourite type of ice cream is liquer ice cream.
Since these frost bite scoops combined with potentially intoxicating alcohol is well, a potential heat turner (up). Did you also know that ice cream is scientifically proven to be a happy food? A little of this cold stuff does light up some pleasure. So, can you imagine the rocky night of indulging these liquer-infused lusciousness with your lover? Happy & naughty, you’ve got them all in the balls (no pun intended).
Last Friday, I visited the famous Udders, at its newest branch- Siglap! One more reason to love staying in the East.
The coast was finally clear. My turn to pick!
At $5.30 per scoop, the premium & connoiseur series from Udders left me smiling silly, as usual. Do not underestimate the alcohol content, as you can get tipsy from the uber uddersome ice cream. Of course, premium alcohol is used here, to give the perfect tipsy twist I’ve been craving for.
ps. There are more liquer flavours than the ones I tried here, you really must try them all!
& I must rave about Mao Shan Wang (King of Cat Durian)! Just like how I like my ice cream to leave me K.O., its intense durian creamy consistency hit my palette like a leopard! Oh so equally intoxicating!

If you don’t know by now, it’s Mid-Autumn Festival today! aka Mooncake Festival!
At 1225 today, my hilarious mom texted me. I’ve copied it & translated into English for better understanding:
The Mid-Autumn Festival, also called the Mooncake or Lantern Festival, is a traditional harvest festival that is celebrated annually by the Chinese. This year, the festival takes place from 11 September to 10 October.
Much like a thanksgiving, it is an important occasion that is spent with family and friends. To celebrate this festival, mooncakes and pomelos are eaten, while activities such as carrying and lighting lanterns also take place. Join in the festivities at numerous events such as the Chinatown Mid-Autumn Festival Street Light-up and the Mass Lantern Walk, and soak in the vibrant atmosphere under the moonlit sky this season– Taken from www.YourSingapore.com

A scoop of ice cream is always not enough.
Though I’m not keen on marriage before 30, I always imagined myself making homemade ice cream for the husband or for kids on a bright Sunday morning so that I can have any flavour in the world that I want, however much, however intense. Trigger happy! But before I can do that, let me find a boyfriend first. In the meantime, I headed to Ice Cream Chefs to get my customized homemade ice cream fix. Don’t we all deserve what we want in life?
Watching my ice cream mixed in on the cold slab- also called Chef’s Rock here at Ice Cream Chefs, it reminded me how much fun I’d when I was a kid playing chef with my coloured playdough. Pounding, beating, throwing in my favourite ingredients & finally seeing it transform into my sweet little scoops of joy. Speaking of which, I sure sound like I enjoy some food bashing as fore play.
I was recommended by The Ice Cream Chef himself the flavours above (I heard they’re his own personal favourite): Green Tea + brownie & Durian Decadence + waffle cereal + Hersheys sauce. I never knew that with the right toppings (or whichever is your favourite), ice creams can taste so much more sensational.
It’s actually much more work than what you’re seeing here. But look at the smiling chef! Totally enjoying it. Not work at all when you’re loving what you do. & that’s also why I enjoyed the ice cream made with passion here.
If you’ve always been fascinated by how you can create your very own ice cream & want to see it live in action, or like me, you simply love homemade goodness, check out Ice Cream Chefs in the east! Go early though, the entire shop was packed by 8pm on a Friday, & so popular the flavours change everyday & are sold out every three to four days. That means, fresh ice cream guaranteed for everyone! I’m so glad there’s no preservatives used. Cheers!
Psss, I heard that Ice Cream Chefs may open its second outlet- a full sized cafe this time round. Continue your support so that we all can soon enjoy ice cream cakes (FYI, this is my ultimate favourite birthday cake) & waffles among the range of savouries.
Lee Hsien Loong & family visited.
Jay Chou visited in July 2010 when he came to Singapore for his concert.
Where’s this restaurant where even the A-listers were spotted?
Once in a while, we all like to be treated with delicacies fit for the Kings’ & Queens’ palettes. Heck, some of us (divas) demand the most extravagant food in the most sparkling settings all the time. Others only dreaming of it.
Now, you don’t have to dream to live the dream!
The “Cze Char” brothers of Defu Lane have quickly expanded to being the “Paradise” brothers, owning the Paradise restaurant chain in Singapore & living the Singapore dream.
With its flagship in ION & led by Chef 冯志强 Fung Chi Keung (Hongkong-born chef who has coming 30 years of culinary experience), Taste Paradise is set to impress with its Cantonese-inspired gourmet spreads to pamper even the pickiest taste buds.
Fret not, people like you & I can bask in the elegance of the Chinese culture & still afford the lavish fine dining. The fusion style of traditional Cantonese cuisine combined with expensive ingredients from the West is a nice twist & has become one of my favourite haunts that I’ve been frequenting ever since Agri brought me there & this time, I finally decided to reveal my hideout.
The main dining hall is a grand combination of modern interior with sophisticated oriental opulence:
Enter the private room & be awed by its contemporary chandelier & Chinese artistry:
I think I left the xiao long bao waiting for too long so the skin was a tad too hard when I ate it. But who doesn’t like dim sum?
I was told the way to eat this starter is to first savour the foie gras, then the Peking duck, & finally the wasabi prawn.
Ok, starting with the foie gras & I already surrendered to it. The crispy exterior & gelatinous moist inside paired with the sweet sauce is just absolutely TDF (to-die-for).
Suckingly good, & one of the items I always order when I visit Taste Paradise.
Wash off your starter with a refreshing fresh & succulent prawn, topped with the juicy watermelon.
This rich broth, which took Taste Paradise’s chef 冯 & team nearly two years to perfect, is painstakingly prepared from scratch- shark’s fin, water & other fine ingredients. Can you imagine the discipline & patience? I didn’t have to gulp this huge pot down worrying it may turn cold. Served in a Japanese hot pot which keeps the soup hot at a consistent temperature, I got myself a generous amount of ingredients. Dipped my crispy spring roll made with spring onion & bacon, it’s easy to understand why the Chinese Emperors loved it. This delicacy certainly is difficult to prepare. If you think you can only afford this at weddings or banquets, be relieved that Taste Paradise serves quality-affordable gourmet.
Continue in your stride with this delicious baked cod. I don’t normally like cod, but this baby here changed my mind with its freshness & roe.
Oh my god. The tenderness & the baked to medium-rare perfection is delightfully deboned effortlessly, & scrumptiously. Every bit of meat was cut off eagerly.
Not forgetting dessert, I ended off with fried durian, so dramatically presented! If this is what you like, do pop by early though. It’s a hot seller!
I’m a slow eater & I really prefer slow lunches like this. This was definitely one unhurried, devoted food chapter paradise for the foodies, just the way I like it.
This is the first part of an ice cream series. Stay tuned for the upcoming articles (I know you’ll)!
It has been one of those days. We were supposed to head to Eastwood to check out a shop space. That was our only objective at 1130 in the morning on a weekday. All very, extremely excited, or put more accurately, nearly hyperventilating & wanting to jump out of the car, I was glad none of us tripped. & of course, what do we see there? An ice cream parlour! Too good to be true, isn’t it? Who am I to ever reject (homemade) ice cream? Plus, it just brought us a level up on the happiness level on this hormonally-challenged day! Whoohoo!
If you walk too fast along Eastwood Centre, chances are you’d most likely to miss Ice Cream Gallery. It’s so tiny, it only has one table with four chairs. But it wasn’t an issue, as soon as we entered, the table of people got up for us. & since I like to steer away from the big brothers like the ones starting with B & also H (you know who) who mass produce, it was exactly why we’d to go in.
Like many, I’ve a passion for ice cream, & seeing that Ice Cream Gallery also takes ice cream seriously & uses only the choicest ingredients (sometimes you just can tell, if not, you should always ask the staff how they make theirs), it motivated me to check out their humble store.
If you check out their website, this is what Ice Cream Gallery guarantees:
“We do not stockpile huge inventories and can offer the guarantee that when you eat our ice cream, it was made that very week. An important fact when considering that most imported brands of ice cream are generally many months old by the time they get to the consumer!”
I mean, just look at this sign! Homemade ice cream made with reduced fat, reduced sugar, fresh ingredients, comes in homestyle waffles & that I’d love it? How did they know me so well?! I couldn’t miss out on meeting a knowing friend like this, could I?
Good ice cream with really good prices:
Plus, they hand-make every flavour in small batches to ensure unrivaled quality:
Lychee on homestyle waffle $6:
I love how I was lured into Ice Cream Gallery. It greeeted me with its delectable freshly toasted waffles! Sexy. & with its homemade lychee ice cream? I could almost imagine myself in a tropical getaway in Eastwood.
Rum & Raisin $3.50:
It’s not easy to make rum & raisin but they’ve done it well!
Hello India (Jackfruit is the national fruit of Bangladash)! This was almost similar to eating the fruit by itself. Intense & full bodied, it’s how I like my ice cream to be. A must try!
Cookies & Cream $3.50:
This was the only flavour that fell short of my expectations. Like the rest, I was prepared to be blown away by the rich creamy tastes but this just glided too lightly on my palette.
As I ran through the photos taken, I realised there are other flavours I didn’t take. Ahh! While you understand that I was indeed too overjoyed with these good ol delicious scoops (which I’m sure you can), you may want to consider bringing them back home or even have your own very special order made (I’m thinking Pumpkin Macademia for me, how about you?):
Everyone’s happy hour & I can’t wait to visit again. You really should check out their godly flavours:

Today while busing back, I missed my stop (again). I’ve a habit of over-sleeping on buses (aren’t they comfy when you’re smashed?) & this time round, it was 15mins worth of bus ride. Normal. I wasn’t angry with myself partly because I’m used to it but mostly because I was staring at my skinny legs in the reflection. I was in a mini skirt & totally checking myself out. Ok, before you scream, I do not have an obsession with being skinny nor am I a narcissist. However, I do not mind at all having skinnier legs (& the mirror I’ve in my room isn’t giving me the pleasure). Correction: I was staring at my legs, which looked skinnier in the reflection of the SBS exit doors.
Check them out next time! They made my day night.
