Where else should I wax?

I love a wax. Actually a tweeze more but when tweezing becomes too painful, I turn to waxing where all the hairs are pulled out from their roots. Oh the satisfaction! Yes, waxing always puts me in a celebratory mood when I find my pores cleared of hairs! Such a joyous ocassion especially when you stare at the clumps of hair on used wax, don’t you think?

Having waxed many parts of my body (you name it, I’ve waxed it), I became bored & came this intrinsic calling for me to find some other body part to wax.

Waxing my nostril fuzz of course! It should have occured to me earlier. & so I hopped excitedly to my trusted waxing parlour, Pink Parlour to give my nostrils a brazilian.

I was convinced it was going to be agonizing. I was prepared to suffer 10 times more pain than tweezing. Heck, if I was never going to go through pain now, what to do about child birth next time? & so the riiiiiiiiping started.

Wendi, Director of Pink Parlour gently pushed blobs of warm wax onto the edges of my nostrils & the next thing I knew, riiiiiiiiiip! & guess what? It wasn’t painful. AT ALL! Zero pain I promise! I know this is hard to believe but I’m a pain wuss so zero pain for me probably meant negative pain to a normal human. I totally need to celebrate the glory of a bald nostril edge. Wendi was so amazingly fast, the whole procedure took three minutes!

Trim, wax, trim, wax & my nostril edges were cleared! Lovely!

Not a wax too far since I want to keep my nostril hairs where they belong; right deep in my nose to do their job of filtering dust. Yes, please stay just there & not grow anymore. Nothing horrifying in my experience here. Even the sticking up of the warm wax was amazingly comforting. Nope, not scorching either. I cannot wait to go back again!

So what’s like to be breathing with a bald nostril edge? Nothing special, really! I did realise marveling more at my nostrils now though. 100% satisfied!

So Frenchly euphoric if you don’t have sex after it feels wrong

Disclaimer: Am writing this entry in a hurry so please excuse me on the brief food description. If you’re vising the cafe, order as much as you can!

Of course I’m reluctant to write about this cozy little French place called Black Sheep Cafe. Its dining capacity is so limited & packed as always I’d be pissed if I encounter any more difficulty in reserving a table next time. Anyway, I’ve no idea why in the world there are so few online raves about this gem. Ahh, the selfish thought of keeping it known to themselves perhaps.

But there’s still a part of me wanting to share & unmask the elegant simplicity that French food in Singapore can be less high-profile & very much more on the affordable grounds. There’s nothing flashy about this French cafe, in fact, it looks like this on the outside:

The delicious cheese starter which was  more soothing than pungent (luckily):

The lobster bisque so lighly-seasoned, it was almost silky to the taste:

Chicken; I’d have this again in a heartbeat. It was so ace I was close to tears, really:

Duck confit; so damn dope it could convert any non-duck eaters. Cccrispy skin & juicy insides sparked fireworks in my mouth:

Even more comforting was the soft, chatter of elegant diners, almost like a graceful breeze that blanketed us in our own gastranomical affair at Black Sheep Cafe. All dishes beyond perfect, except for the wait for food. That explains the lack of dessert pictures. We couldn’t take waiting 45 minutes a dish any longer. Will save it for the next time!

When the fine line between black & brown blurs beautifully

In a mass of light ah lian/ Japanese hair colour trend in Singapore, sometimes going dark takes a little dare. Melvin, my hair stylist from Salon Vim can almost read my mind when it comes to hair & colour. I don’t know how he does it, even when I tell him a different tone, he mixes something else & that something else turns out to be what I really wanted deep down. Amazing, isn’t he?

Since black hair may look harsh on some, I went a dark dark midnight, not quite black though. & I decided to debunk the myth that all dark hair look ageing. In fact, I think it’s so versatile it brought me from sweet to sexy.

I thought I would never find such a wonderful facial in my lifetime.

When none of the facial therapists I’ve encountered have met my expectations, I started to wonder if I’d ever enjoy a perfect facial.

Each stage of the facial was a sensory delight. I felt machines that weren’t used on my skin before. & these tools felt amazingly gentle yet hard at work.

1. I absolutely loved the sonic cleansing where the hand piece was gently vibrated over my greasy skin, I could feel it removing all gunk from my pores & trust me, the feeling was simply sensational! Evon’s technique was superb & you really need an experienced therapist like her to handle this equipment, if not you may end up with scratched skin. This was what came out of the pores on my nose:

2. & then came extraction, the love-hate process we all experience. I thought I knew the pores on my face by now, but Evon was so damn thorough she extracted even the tiniest & unknown pimples, blackheads, whiteheads from my face, to even my hairline! She believes that the gunk should be removed to prevent acne from thriving in clogged areas.

3. I was given a nice surprise when Evon used high frequency pulses on those squeezed out acne to speed up the healing of the fresh ‘wounds’. How ace is it to have these bumps less bumpy? (I even went to an event the day after extraction) The pulses felt like very mild laser zaps, nothing painful though, so I’m really glad GLOMAX Aesthetics combines the art of the hand technique & effective machines to their best use.

4. Then, my pores were treated to a cocktail of vitamins, & even better; ultrasound used to penetrate these vitamins further into my skin. Perfect!

I’ve never experienced such extent of porcelain-ity after a facial before! Un-photoshopped and unpretencious, Nikoi Island is the kind of picture-perfect when you dream of a beach resort. In reality, it is a mere 2 hours boat-and-bus ride off Bintan.

A degree north of the equator, th 15 hectare land at Nikoi Island is so unspoilt and exquisite it sparkles with every touch.

There is little to do but much to relax. Choose among water sports like snorkelling, kayaking, windsurfing or simply curl up with a book from Nikoi’s library and even chat with the extremely friendly staff. I was really looking forward to Nikoi for some soul cleansing but I fell ill for most of the time there. I brought Readers’ Digest but I ended up looking at the sea more than its text.

The island also boasts a rainforest where colossal trees like the native Banyan trees, provide a santuary to a diverse population of local birds.

To cavort in the cacophony of the very last night, the staff at Nikoi Island masterly set off a rolling sea of colored fire stretching out in every  direction toward the horizon, over-looking the ocean.

Much life unfolds on the sand. On our last morning, some of us even witnessed the hatching of turtles. So cheers to more wildlife encounters on this serene island and here’s a Tiger at every get together!

& whether or not it was a mind detox for me? I’d decide the next time when I’m there, not ill.

Hot now sleek style

Eariler this month, I took a (hairy) risk. You see, I overspent my time on making up (oh what’s new) for Aldo Get Lucky Launch & had just a few minutes for styling hair. I was left with two choices; I could still do some quick decent curls OR I could just pour serum & cross my fingers.

Since I was running beyond extremely late, I thought I should totally make a dramatic decision; liberating myself of curling thongs & other styling tools. Actually, how real would it be if you guys get to see how fabulous Melvin from Salon Vim is? He’s been my hair stylist for the past year. & he’s fabulous! Have I already mentioned that?  & because I’m so nice, I decided to step out personally with my naked hair except for a dollop of serum so you really get to see how excellent Melvin’s cuts are!

Seriously, do you even need much styling when you’ve someone as awesome as Melvin to cut your hair?

An excuse not to blowstyle my hair, yay! I felt like I’d a day off! Sucha chore to style your own hair every day, really.

Plus I could get the first look at Aldo’s Fall/Winter collection.

Which was a fashion gold mine of heeled brogues, suede boots, gold buckles & a palette of bold colors, camel brown & matt plus shiny mixes! & I also heard that Aldo is setting up its first suburban outlet at Junction 8 this Christmas December!

Alert! Hair good enough for close ups! Please look closely at how nice it actually is! When all I did was smooth it out with some serum. No hair dryer, no straightener, no pins, no  no other tools used.

& because of the wonderful hair cut, the niceness of my natural hair lasted through the night. Thank you, Melvin! Again, he’s my fabulous hair stylist. Shy to have pictures taken of him. But fab nonetheless!

Goofing around with the new shades given by Aldo. Suits the hair yes? I can’t believe how fuss-free Melvin’s made my hair to be!

When noone ever plans on eating a wrap, how on earth does one end up having one?

Photo doesn't accurately depict the content of this post but am just inspired to write since I'd no idea why I even ate this Curried Eggs Wrap from Juiced @ Republic Plaza. Which btw, was lovely & well-wrapped! Especially the lighty-salted toasty wrap that made eating a wrap totally worthwhile (if you're not a wrap person)!

1. At first, you don’t even know you want a wrap

In the first place, you’re generally not aware of any desire to eat a wrap. You may be strolling, shopping, talking on the phone or even walking out for lunch. Whichever the case, you’re not dying of huger & you also don’t have the need to eat a wrap.

2. You feel bad you didn’t get to eat one

You recall that night when you opened your fridge only to find leftovers good to be made into a sandwich / wrap only to find no bread / wrap. One of the worst bachelorette’s bedtime moments ever & so you decide you better make up for the lost opportunity / satisfy a possible future craving.

3. You just don’t want a sandwich when a wrap sounds cooler

You’re so bored of buying expensive sandwiches for a quick lunch when all they do is fall out of your mouth, dammit! You didn’t pay good money to tolerate such misbehaviour of vegetables or meat ok! Should you opt for a wrap then? Convinced it should be a classier way to enter the vegetables into your mouth.

4. You underestimate your hunger

6 out of 7 days a week, you order too much food. You just have no self control when it comes to food. So today, you tell yourself you can do it. You can eat a normal portion, like how a normal person eats. You think you should order one wrap. Yea, that’s possible!

5. You panic when you realize you may need a wrap

OH MY GOD! You do need a wrap! NOW NOW NOW or you’re going to die! You’re scared that unforgiving darkness of hunger suffocates you & eats you alive. You so need to do somthing about it.

6. You accept you seriously need a wrap afterall

What? You never crave for a wrap but you accept reality anyway. You’re not going to lie to yourself anymore hence you make a melodramatic effort to transport yourself to the nearest wrap station ASAP.

7. You start to pick the ingredients

Your wrap is going to be the best ever, obviously. It’s a wrap rule! If you don’t obey it, you’re going to regret it. You point out to the server the items you want added & feel a little better as you see everyone coming together on your wrap.

8. You marvel at the monster creation

Has hunger clouded your judement? Why’s the wrap so… big? & distorted? Think, think, think. You begin to study the wrap & plan where the first bite should be. & the second, & the third.

9. You anticipate the burst of flavours

There’s nothing to back track on now & you console yourself that this seemingly inedible tower is ‘going to be the best ever’. Wrap rule, remember? Yay! ‘You’re such a natural Master Chef!’ you tell yourself.

10 a. You attack

Whoops. You might have miscalculated some things, mainly the width & length of your mouth & also the lack of cutlery. But you give yourself a pat on the back anyway for having the courage to eat a wrap. You just were never a wrap person! To try something you don’t like to eat usually takes balls ok!

The plan you’d earlier on has to be revised. Perhaps with more creativity?

10 b. You attack again

Great. Not happening. Nope. It’s kind of… cumbersome. What now.

11. You resort to violence

Oh yes. Just what you’ve been waiting for. You punch & smash & pound & crush it. You stand on it like a babarian & beat it with your palms & fists in ridiculous annoyance. Condiments spill out from wherever they could but you obviously ignore the curious glances from the neighbour table.

12. Achievement… or?

Fabulous. The wrap finally submits to your reshaping creativity. You thank yourself for spending enough time bashing playdough in your childhood.

You come to a concluesion of not going to eat one again.

In life there’s dandruff, & more dandruff.

When I was introduced to an organic shampoo recently, I jumped at it. Exotic & earthy ingredients like Lilly Pilly & Rosalina on my hair, why not, right?! I’d high hopes for my new buy & it was kinda disappointing when I realized it didn’t work out for me. Do you get that too?

At first, it didn’t occur to me that my new shampoo was the culprit untill I went for my monthly visit at Salon Vim & spoke to my hair stylist, Melvin. After talking, he suspected that my dandruff might be because of a shampoo issue. Since I don’t really relate to the other causes of dandruff like i) poor health [Seriously? I think I eat better than the average Singaporean- with limited junk food, or so I think, mild exercise like walking & self control on alcohol] ii) emotional stress [Are you kidding? Now you know why I’m happy most of the time! & I sleep well & eat well. Too much at times. I constantly KO on this love drug that keeps me warm & fuzzy!

It’s saddening that many expensive/ restaurant chocolates are not tasty. To have found the ultimate chocolate can be such a special moment, you know? But luckily for me, I was introduced to Donna Manis, my favourite bake shop which sells chocolate tarts TDF. Even luckier for me, the chocolatier Sherie, who used to make these tarts at Donna Manis has since left the bakery to set up her own catering & hasn’t forgotten me!

You see, since I’m Sherie’s chocolate tarts’ lifelong fan & I definitely proclaimed my love very clear from the start, she had so kindly delivered me a box of these little brown beings! You’ve no idea how super thrilled I was to receive it!

Each bite of these tarts is to be very honest, melt in the mouth. & get this, has such a clean & cooling aftertaste I often wonder if I’m eating ice cream. Something that you won’t get from the greasy factory-made chocolates, you know? I still have not discovered Sherie’s secret in making such distintive little jewels but that’s ok, cause she’s taking in orders for her freshly handmade tarts & what nots.

It’s truly the kind of dessert your guests will remember you for & comes at an unbelievably cheap price. Call the genuine lovely Sherie! You can totally justify buying her best tarts (also the best chocolate tarts known by me) all the time!

If you’ve legs & know how to use them, then you’d know to wear a pair of SHHs (Super High Heels)! Basically, you wear them with everything. Anything, really! Torn shorts, acid jeans, crazy couture, mom’s handdowns, slinky swimwear & whatever. & who doesn’t know Aldo has many SHHs.

Though it wasn’t Carrie Bradshaw’s heels that landed her Mr Big, he definitely did notice her ever-changing status. & trust me, every guy checks out your legs (butt & heels) the moment you get up from your seat. Heck, even if they don’t like us in heels cause we look too fabulous, we still wear them, right? 

Because we don’t wear it for them, we wear it for ourselves! There are a few things that lift my spirits from zero to sixty. Having great food being one, donning a pair of SHHs the other. Though Lancome prides itself with sophisticated massage techniques, somehow, my facialist’s technique was too rough & slipshod for my liking.

Magical? Unless the massage technique was good enough to smoothen out my wrinkles with Genifique.
